WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app in the world, but most people only use a fraction of its features. Beyond basic messaging, WhatsApp hides powerful tools for privacy, organization, and convenience that can completely change how you communicate.
1. Lock Sensitive Chats with Fingerprint
WhatsApp lets you lock individual chats behind your fingerprint or face recognition. Once locked, the chat moves to a hidden "Locked Chats" folder that only you can access. This is perfect for private conversations you do not want anyone else to see if they pick up your phone.
How to do it:
1. Open the chat you want to lock.
2. Tap the contact's name at the top of the screen to open their profile.
3. Scroll down and tap "Chat Lock."
4. Toggle on "Lock this chat with fingerprint" (or face recognition on supported phones).
5. Confirm your fingerprint. The chat will now move to the "Locked Chats" section at the top of your chat list.
Note: Locked chats are hidden from the main chat list. To access them, pull down on the chat list and you will see the "Locked Chats" folder appear.
2. View Once Photos and Videos
When sending photos or videos, you can make them "View Once" so the recipient can only open them one time. After viewing, the media disappears permanently. No screenshots, no saving, no traces left behind. This is ideal for sharing sensitive information or quick moments you do not want permanently stored.
How to do it:
1. Open any chat and tap the camera icon or attachment button.
2. Select or take a photo/video.
3. Before sending, look for the "1" icon in a circle next to the send button.
4. Tap the "1" icon to enable View Once mode. It will turn green.
5. Send the message. The recipient will see "Photo" or "Video" with a "1" badge, and can only open it once.
Important: WhatsApp does not prevent screenshots on all devices. On some Android phones, the recipient can still take a screenshot of View Once media. Use this feature with that limitation in mind.
3. Default Disappearing Messages
Instead of turning on disappearing messages for each chat individually, you can set a default timer for all new conversations. Every new chat you start will automatically have disappearing messages enabled, keeping your chat history clean without manual effort.
How to do it:
1. Open WhatsApp and go to Settings (three dots in the top right).
2. Tap "Privacy."
3. Scroll down and tap "Default message timer."
4. Choose 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.
5. All new chats will now automatically have disappearing messages turned on with your chosen timer.
Note: This only affects new chats. Existing conversations keep their current settings. You can still override the default for individual chats.
4. Custom Notifications per Contact
Assign unique ringtones, notification sounds, and vibration patterns to specific contacts. This way, you instantly know who messaged you without even looking at your phone. Set a special tone for your partner, your boss, or your family group.
How to do it:
1. Open the chat with the contact you want to customize.
2. Tap the contact's name at the top.
3. Tap "Custom Notifications."
4. Check "Use custom notifications."
5. Set your preferred notification tone, vibration pattern, and ringtone for calls from that contact.
5. Star Important Messages
WhatsApp has a built-in bookmarking system for messages. You can "star" any message to save it to a dedicated section that you can access anytime. Use this for addresses, phone numbers, important links, meeting details, or anything you need to find later without scrolling through hundreds of messages.
How to do it:
1. Long press on any message in a chat.
2. Tap the star icon that appears in the top toolbar.
3. To view all starred messages, go to the main chat list, tap the three dots, and select "Starred messages."
Pro tip: You can also star messages in group chats. This is great for saving important announcements or shared links in busy groups.
6. Read Messages Without Blue Ticks
Sometimes you want to read a message without the sender knowing you have seen it. There are two reliable methods to do this without turning off read receipts globally.
Method 1: Airplane Mode
1. Turn on Airplane Mode before opening the message.
2. Open WhatsApp and read the message while offline.
3. Force close WhatsApp (swipe it away from recent apps).
4. Turn off Airplane Mode. The blue ticks will never send because WhatsApp was closed before reconnecting.
Method 2: Widget Reading
1. Add the WhatsApp widget to your home screen.
2. The widget shows recent messages without opening the app. Read them from the widget and the sender will never see blue ticks.
Alternative: You can disable read receipts entirely in Settings, Privacy, Read receipts. But this also hides your blue ticks from others, which may affect your relationships.
7. Search Inside Chats
Instead of scrolling through months of messages to find something, use the search function. Open any chat, tap the three dots, and select "Search." Type a keyword and WhatsApp will jump to every message containing that word. This works for finding old links, shared locations, or specific conversations.
How to do it:
1. Open any chat.
2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner.
3. Tap "Search."
4. Type your keyword. WhatsApp highlights all matches and lets you jump between them with the up and down arrows.
